Baghdad To Brooklyn

Baghdad To Brooklyn

A memoir by Laith Yousif

The Book

Baghdad To Brooklyn is the story of a man who left everything he knew — the ancient streets of Baghdad, the warmth of family, the only language that felt like home — and found himself standing in New York City with little more than a degree, a dream, and an uncertain future.

It is the story of arriving at the World Trade Center for work in 2001, of watching the towers fall, and of the years that followed: asylum, advocacy, displacement, and eventually belonging. It is a story about being Iraqi in America during the most contentious decades of the relationship between those two worlds.

Above all, it is a story about what it means to rebuild a life — brick by brick, borough by borough — from Baghdad to Brooklyn.

Author’s Note

“I started writing From Baghdad to New York as a blog in 2002 because I wanted the world to know that Iraqis were real people — not abstractions, not statistics, not collateral damage. Years later, I realised those blog posts were the first draft of something much longer. This book is that something.”
